So fall calls for more rustic decor than you normally have out. The best kind of decor, if I do say so myself! I mean really.. who doesn’t love the old rustic look? Old pieces just give something more character and appeal, right?? And if you haven’t found that perfect aged item, or don’t have the time to wait.. haha, I can help you get the look you want!
Rather than hunting for the perfect old items, I recently bought a couple of cooking pans from the Dollar Tree. I wanted to test a couple of aging techniques on them. I’ve got something in mind I want to use them for 😉
What you’ll need:
Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner
A 5-Gallon Bucket (optional)
Steel Wool (optional)
Clear Acrylic Spray Paint
So, first things first, put on your gloves. Lysol toilet bowl cleaner is no joke! It will eat you up. (Speaking from experience..). Get your trash bag and open it up, placing one of the pans in it. Drizzle some Lysol on it in no particular pattern.
Here you can either leave the drizzles or you can spread it everywhere with your glove on. (Where the Lysol is, is where the aging will happen.) I chose to spread it all over.
Rather than squirting more Lysol on the next dish, I just poured the extra onto the other one.
Now close it up and make sure no kids or animals can get into it. Leave it 8 hours or overnight.
When it was time to pull them out, I noticed a clear film on them, not sure if it is just on Dollar Tree pans or not, but I then took my steel wool and scrubbed it off. This what it looked like after.
You can stop here if you like the look. I decided I wanted more aging. So I did a vinegar soak overnight. (Pour vinegar into the bucket to cover the pans).
In the picture below, both pans went through the vinegar soak. The top pan is after Lysol and vinegar soak. The bottom pan went a step further and had a second Lysol soak. After the soak, I took my steel wool and gave both pans a good cleaning scrub. (There is going to be extra rust that comes off easy that needs to be cleaned off, don’t be afraid to really scrub hard!). Lastly, top them off with a clear acrylic spray paint!
I can’t decide which one I like better! They both have something about them that I absolutely love!
Alright you guys, there you have it! It’s sooo easy!
Comment with some pieces you made!
